Tips for job search

Where to look for jobs?

The easiest way to find open positions is on websites focused on job search. You can also search for jobs online by searching for “open positions” and, for example, the name of the field or job.

You can browse open positions on the following websites, for example:

Human resource or staffing companies

Human resource or staffing companies lease labour to companies. Typically, the employer and payer of the wage is a personnel leasing company, but the work is done for the companies. Staffing companies can also recruit personnel directly to their client companies. Personnel leasing is done in almost all fields.

The hidden job market

Not all jobs are always posted in public, but they might be open in the so-called hidden job market. So it is worth approaching interesting employers with open applications, even if they do not have any open positions available.

Job application and CV

A good application and CV will make you stand out as a job seeker. Open positions receive lots of applications, and with a well-written application and CV, you can make a good impression. Remember that different fields may have different criteria for applications and CVs.

CV or resume

The purpose of a CV is to briefly present your skills and experience. A good length for a CV is generally 1–2 pages. It is important to tailor your CV to each job application so that you can always highlight your most relevant skills for the position you are applying for.

Job application

A job application is like a sales pitch, where you introduce yourself to the employer and try to get them interested in your skills. Your job application and your CV should complement each other. While your CV gives you more detailed information about your work history and education, the job application allows you to describe why your skills are suitable for the open position and what motivates you in that position. A job application is traditionally written, but for some positions you can also make an impression with a video application.

Preparing for a job interview

If you receive an invitation for a job interview, you should prepare for it carefully. Prepare for the job interview by thinking about why you would be a good choice for the position and why you are motivated to apply for the job in question. It is also a good idea to think about answers to the most common questions asked in job interviews. You can also enter the job advertisement text into AI, and ask the AI to generate interview questions for you based on the advertisement.

Elevator pitch

When discussing job search, people sometimes talk about an elevator pitch. This refers to a short, elevator ride length introduction about yourself and your strengths. An elevator pitch may not be necessary for your job search, but thinking about it can help you in the job search process. If you only had a moment to make a good first impression on a potential employer, how would you introduce yourself?

Networking

Networking means creating and expanding your own social relationships and in doing so, creating networks. Networks can provide you with information about interesting jobs openings, and offer peer support in matters related to career planning and working life. Professional networks can be created at work, at various events and online, for example, on LinkedIn. Social connections in your own everyday life can also serve as part of your professional network.

Recruitment events

Recruitment events are a great way to get to know different employers and widen your network. Päijät-Häme Employment Services organizes and participates in various events that support your job search.
